After completing a two-year foundation at West Sussex College of Design, I went on to study Illustration at Maidstone College of Art in Kent and was awarded a B.A. with honours in the July of 1986. In 2002 I received an M.A. in Illustration from Kingston University in Surrey. Later that year, I moved to St. Ives in Cornwall and set up a studio within The Sloop Craft Market.
As an illustrator, working with both text and image deepened my love for storytelling, and it is this art form which feeds and motivates my work. The collections of folklore and fairytales that I read as a child, and now choose to work with as an illustrator, have opened up a world of symbolism and meaning through which I have come to further understand how narrative can support and nurture our inner lives. It is this inner life that I hope my images connect with.
I like to work with graphite, as it forms its own shapes and shadows, often allowing the image to take shape organically. I use chalk pastels when working in colour, as they afford a similar feeling.
